History

The Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation of Akron was founded in 1988 by Judge James R. Williams who was the founding principal of the foundation along with Eta Tau Lambda Chapter brothers Dr. Allen F. Killings and Sylvester Small, Ph.D. and the Eta Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. Judge Williams served as the foundation’s first chairman, establishing a legacy which lasted for 32 years ending in 2020. Atty. Charles L. Greene succeeded Judge Williams, continuing the legacy through the important work of providing support to non-profit organizations. Atty. Greene led the foundation from January 2021 to March 2023. The Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation of Akron is currently led by Chairman Charles R Parnell. Chairman Parnell was elected in March 2023 and is leading the foundation towards their goal of providing support where we can make a difference in individuals’ lives.

Mission

The mission of the Foundation is “Uplifting the Greater Akron Area through support of community-based organizations and initiatives that positively impact local health, education and leadership development; with a special emphasis on minority populations, children/youth, families in poverty and low-income neighborhoods.”
